Welcome

This is not an ebay auction. It does not involve Pay Pal, nor an automatic posting of prices. There is no seller “rating” because the seller has never done anything remotely like this.

In fact, the sale is more of what might have taken place before the Internet arrived. The owner of some estate materials would have put an ad in the Middleburg papers and a magazine or two. People would have contacted him. He would have described items as best he could and, if people were still interested, made arrangements for them to view specific items on an appointment basis. It would be old fashioned and low-keyed, as Cappy was.

That, in fact, is how the auction will work

Seller Description

My name is Henry McCall, a.k.a."Sandy." I live in Washington D.C., Vermont, and Oregon. My sister, Mary McCall Smith, was married to Cappy for twenty years. She died in 1999, three years before him. After he died in 2002, Cappy’s daughter distributed property from his Landmark Road house in Middleburg to herself, her half-brother, and me. I put my items in storage and put off even thinking about them for a long time.

With the exception of four equestrian Staffordshire china cups given to me by the Smiths, every item in the auction came out of the Landmark Road house. Cappy built that home in the early 90’s on land held out of the sale of his other residence, Persimmon Tree Farm, where the couple had lived previously.

A General Description of what is for Sale

There were too few items for a real “estate” auction, and only several items of substantial market value. I included less valuable personal items as I knew Cappy had many admirers around Middleburg and thought some of them might like to have something from his home to remember him by. Many of his friends will recognize objects in the pictures. And, as I imagine this will probably be the only sale that ever takes place of items from the house, I have tried to make the pictures as clear and the descriptions as straightforward as possible.

One disclaimer: I have no idea where most of these items came from. Some of the trophies have inscriptions, the origins to which I- as a non-horseman- am clueless. Regarding silver and silver plate items, I have limited the descriptions to what I know: the dimensions and any stamped information.

Reserves have been posted on the dining room table, the painting and other pieces of furniture. The personal items have no reserves. Anything not sold will be donated to charity.

Where Are the Items Located?

The furniture items are located in storage in Warrenton, Virginia. The painting is in a residence in Washington, D.C. I will make arrangements for people to view them by appointment.

How Do I Bid?

The sale begins at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2007, and ends at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007.

Initially, you must email me by clicking on a caption below a picture. The email will act as your registration. If you request it, I will call you back on the telephone.

I will be travelling part of the time during the auction so if you do not receive a response to your initial email within 24 hours, please call me at the number listed below.

Should you decide to make a bid, it must be done through emails. That is how each item will be tracked. Every day or two, I will post an item’s highest bid on the web site. People can check the price by clicking on a specific picture. During the last few days I will post bids twice a day.

Payment and Shipping

All items over $300 must be paid for by bank check or cashier’s check.

Should a person not make timely contact with me regarding a winning bid, I will contact the next highest bidder and offer them the item.

Winning bidders for the furniture and the painting must make arrangements to pick up their property by April 8, 2007.

Winners of non-furniture items will have a choice. I will be in Middleburg twice in the week after the sale. For two hours I will be in a central location in the town and people can pick their items up from me directly at no cost. Otherwise, items will be shipped to the winning bidder upon my receiving a check for a specific item plus its shipping costs.

Summary

The final sale of any item will be my decision and mine alone.

People should feel free to call me to see how an item is doing and I will try to be as frank and fair as I can in letting them know what is going on. For many years I didn’t think about any of these objects because I missed the people that had owned them. Now the idea of having some fun with this sale is as important to me as trying to maximize any price. Right after the sale ends, I am going to Rome where I will have dinner in an old restaurant behind the Pantheon where you are served by nuns who often sing hymns at the same time. From there I will remove to the Café Della Pace where I intend to have a wine in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and to the very interesting life they led.
